E15 Gasoline on Horizon

DTN -- WASHINGTON (DTN) -- Ethanol and farm groups praised an Environmental Protection Agency decision Friday to approve a higher level blend of ethanol known as E15, but the Environmental Working Group announced a campaign to discourage consumers from using it, and an Agriculture Department economist said he did not think it will win acceptance soon.
In formal terms, EPA released an evaluation of information submitted by the Renewable Fuels Association and Growth Energy for satisfying the emissions and health effects data requirements for registration of E15, gasoline containing 15% ethanol.
"This is a remarkable achievement by America's clean, renewable fuels industry, as moving to E15 results in reduced dependence on foreign oil, jobs here in America and consumer savings at the pump," accord

They were forced to changed that about 2 years ago. There's been a push in the Florida legislature now to change the force EtOH blending. Haven't had time to keep up with it so I don't know if it died in committee.

(Typically High Octane only)" That's just the opposite of what we've got in Iowa, at least all of Iowa that I've seen so far. Here the pattern is for regular to be E0 (though I'm pretty sure there's a little ethanol in there for pollution control), while Midgrade and Premium are E10. Due to state subsidies, Midgrade is the cheapest, and what gets posted on most signs, with Regular being the next highest in price and Premium being the most expensive.

So via Article VI, Clause 2 (Supremacy Clause) of the US Constitution at least some of what you're suggesting would be illegal. IF your State/Region didn't require it's use to meet the Clean Air Act... well I guess then you could bar/limit it's use. Locally in WI counties that aren't required to use E10 you might find some stations offering "Regular" (E0) as an option in Mid and High Octane blends. (Typically High Octane only) Until a few years ago it was still common to see E0 in all fuel grades outside the EPA's RFG Zone in SE WI. (With maybe some stations offering Mid-Octane "Plus" E10... typically at the same prices as Regular Octane (E0).) [Edited by: JediKnight at 2/25/2012 1:11:13 PM EST]

Let the states that don't want it, outlaw it. The feds have no business regulating it for use, if the price is right and people want it , they'll buy it. At least now the subsidies are eliminated. People should not be forced to buy it.

Course I also learned what water/"bad fuel" (in my case leaving fuel sit in a Snowmobile's Fuel System for almost a year+). This Snowmobile was performing poorly for YEARS... Because we hadn't done ANYTHING to the Carburetor/Fuel System in like "forever"... except occasionally change the Fuel/Oil Filters and the occasional dose of STA-BIL... but if the Carb has all kinds of junk in it and the Fuel (E10 or E0) is "suspect"... we're fighting the wrong battle. Locally we've had E10 for years... but a little TLC about two weeks ago and this Snowmobile is back in fighting form. So next time you might try draining the Fuel in the off-season, stick with fresh stuff and maybe try using some Marine STA-BIL on the "finicky" equipment that can't seem to handle your Local Fuel Supply. Might keep things in check.

How can we Not use it if the government says we have to and it is in the gasoline? With all the ‘newly’ discovered oil and natural gas why produce ethanol? No ethanol and No fuel from food! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using ‘other’ forms of transportation to help lower your cost. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!
